Foundation and development of the association
The 40th anniversary of the company in 1985 together with the promotion of the Austrian Labor Union Federation "Dig, where you are" was the kick-off of the Geschichteclub VÖEST. A few historically interested women and men came together and started monthly meetings and discussions.
This group of persons were:
Ilse Hauptmann, Alois Kriechbaumer und Helmuth Gröbl, at this time retired already,made it their business to work actively together in order to create something valuable for the posterity.
Club rooms
Two offices in the Werkshotel Nr. 2 could be acquired, and the necessary furniture came from the second-hand storage area in the plant.
Photoarchiv, Literature, Estates
Informative material, a few hundred thousands of photographs and negatives from the past and literature and estates from former high-ranking employees did find the way to the Geschichteclub.
Objects and Exhibits
In 1987 the group of people began to collect and exhibit pieces like office machines, table-ware, furniture, tools, patterns etc.
Visitor's Book of the "Hermann Göring Works" in Linz from 1938 onwards
On the 19th of May 1988 Johannes Meissner ( former administrator of real estates ) submitted solemnly the first visitor's book to Geneal Manager Lewinsky and he forwarded it to the Geschichteclub.
Registration as Association
On the 9th of October 1989 the Geschichteclub VÖEST was registered as association. This step allowed to get support and to collect donations officially, work-fellows became members of the association and had to ellect the managing board every two years.
Exhibitions The first exhibition was opened on February 5, 1990. The current permanent exhibition which replaced the first one was opened on April 10, 2000. The exhibition "Construction of the Steel Industry in Linz beginning 1938" was opened on January 15, 2007.
Chronicles
Several chronicles have been written till now like the general chronicle about the entire VOEST, but also articles about the various departments and workshops within the VOEST plant.
